WW2UsCollector Posted March 30, 2023 Share #1 Posted March 30, 2023 Here's one of my favorite groupings that I own! This flag was brought back by Earl Enders. I believe Earl got this flag, and other items from Peleliu. Earl was a veteran of Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu. He met his best friend Pete in boot camp, and they ended up being assigned to Company C, 7th Marines. On Peleliu Earl and Pete, both landed together. Sadly on one of the days in September of 1944 early in the battle. Pete would be shot and killed by a Japanese Sgt Maj right next to Earl. Earl shot the Japanese Sgt Maj in the chest and grabbed this Flag, photos, and money from his pocket. When Earl shot the Sgt Maj the flag was folded up inside the pocket, and the bullets ended up going right through the flag, and the staining on the meatball is blood. Earl would take shrapnel to the temple and left side of his face on September 16th, 1944 and Earl would be evacuated off the island on September 29th, 1944. The flag was translated, and all of the Kanji is signatures from different people. What's interesting is typically good luck flags have slogans, but this one doesn't have any. It also appears to be a handmade flag. I got this grouping from a friend who got it directly from Earl's son. I've tried finding out Pete's last name, but I haven't been able to. Mr. Bushido Posted March 30, 2023 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2023 I think these are great witnesses of history. For your information, banknotes are worth 1 yen. Supplementing this, 1 yen in those days was worth about 2,000 yen today.
