Hi guys.  My Dad served in the submarine fleet and I am trying to paint his plaques for him.  Most of them I can find what the patches looked liked online, but I can't find these.  Does anyone know where I can find the patches or the colors for these?

Thanks

Aloha and welcome to the forum,

Those are two interesting plaques you've posted for us to share.  The first one is an unknown plaque from Fleet Sonar School, probably from an advanced course (pro submarine training).  The colors may be guessed at i.e. blue for the ocean, steel grey for the sub, white background for the banner with your choice of color for the lettering, black for the arrow and sonar headset which is the sonarman rate symbol.  I'm sure you've seen the other patch and plaque designs for the Sonar School and can take some elements from them as you wish.

This one I'm familiar with and can help you with the colors.

  • The sea is blue and the sky a wash of light grey and white.
  • The Hull & Superstructure of the MONOB is haze grey and the Masts & Aerials are black.
  • The Submarine dolphins would be Silver for enlisted or gold for officer with matching 'MONOB YAG-61' lettering in silver or gold.
  • The 'Day Shapes' Ball-Diamond-Ball are Black and means 'Restricted in ability to maneuver'.

Below are some photos and patches which you're probably familiar with of the MONOB from my collection for reference and ideas.

Dave Murline hoists the “Day Shapes”. The shapes and sequence of “ball, diamond, ball” are hoisted when we are towing equipment at slow speeds and cannot maneuver very well. It signals to nearby ships that we have a “restriction in ability to maneuver”. When any vessel is displaying these shapes, nearby ships stay well away from it and give it the right of way. At night, the shapes are replaced by a “red, white, red” sequence of lights that means the same. One of the satellite antennas domes is behind Dave.
