bday7750 Posted March 3, 2023 Share #1 Posted March 3, 2023 This was in my dad's house and I'd like to ID it and sell it. Any ideas about it? I can see any maker's marks and it appears to be fairly old. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Brian
Doctorofwar Posted March 16, 2023 Share #2 Posted March 16, 2023 It is German, I believe a M1873 artillery saber. As it is not US Militaria I would recommend you post it on the world militaria forum as I am sure the moderators will lock this topic.

Horseclover Posted March 16, 2023 Share #4 Posted March 16, 2023 Sorry, not 1873 but 50 years or so earlier. A fairly common pattern used by the US militia after the 1812 War and before the Mexican War.. I started a thread on US militia swords and the sword posted here fits the bill. bday7750 Posted April 22, 2023 Author Share #5 Posted April 22, 2023 My sister and I conferred long distance and she was able to put the saber back together with the cap on the end of the tang. Still can't find any exact looking sabers. Thought you might be able to seeing it all together.
reschenk Posted April 22, 2023 Share #6 Posted April 22, 2023 I agree with Glen this is probably a post-War of 1812 militia saber. The general style is very common, but I don't think I've ever seen a tang screw cap like yours. Normally the tang is peened. Here is one of mine:
bday7750 Posted April 22, 2023 Author Share #7 Posted April 22, 2023 Does that make it more desirable with the cap? I’m trying to nail down value and with so many variables it’s been difficult. Thanks for your input! Brian
SARGE Posted April 24, 2023 Share #8 Posted April 24, 2023 Probably less desirability/value with this capstan nut since it is not original to the sword IMHO.
manayunkman Posted April 24, 2023 Share #9 Posted April 24, 2023 The nut has a design on it and is it made of brass because it looks silver.
bday7750 Posted April 24, 2023 Author Share #10 Posted April 24, 2023 It is brass and the end of the tang is shaped to allow the cap to be placed on top. I haven’t seen any bird pommel sabers with this feature. There are no threads on the cap or the end of the tang but the cap fits pretty tightly on the end ot tang but not tight enough to hold everything together
