The first Tomcat deployment was 1974 on the USS Enterprise. The helmets VF2 wore on their first cruise lasted through 1977 before the first change. Affectionatly referred to as "the beachball," the split color helmet design is one that I love. I started a year ago and finally have it put together. Chipping away at it a little at a time, it is finally done except for interior liner. A custom fit APH6 with MBU-5 mask.I've seen all of them with the skull, but I've only ever seen one photo of 1 that had these stars.  It was a collector photo I saved many years ago, and I don't know from where. I also don't know that the helmet was authentic, but it appears to be. It was a custom fit, cast receivers with an early Protection Inc cover. I used a normal EEK visor cover because I did not have an original available.

Very nice looking helmet. Interesting artwork.

Do you think the stars would imply that it was the CAG helmet? Though I see six stars here instead of the five that were painted on Bullets 200CAGBuNo158985April1974.jpg.f68b11ae277faae785d1448d070b9711.jpg

I think the helmet stars are related to the squadron patch. Notice the six stars and the three stars on the patch.

The colored stars on the Vertical Stab are CAG related.
