The Diamond T is in the display case, the Jeep MB is there and it's on to the next build which will round out what I had set out to do.  The CCKW or Deuce and 1/2 long wheel base version is now on the workbench.  The frame has been started.  The frame has a unique feature which I am sure most of you will pick up right away.   Currently working on springs and spring hangers, the trunnion and rear springs are under construction.  I had a pair of 6 hole wheels made up by a friend with a 3D printer.  As soon as I get those a mold will be made to do the wheels up for each tire.  According to some of the information I have, only about 30% of these trucks had winches so that detail is up in the air.

I've been working the grunts hard the last couple of weeks.  In truth I ran out of RTV and casting resin so I had to wait until the materials came in.  Along with some 3D printed masters, there are resin castings, brass parts and parts from the 1941 Chevy pickup kit.  Kit parts include the engine, radiator and a couple of frame cross members.  I had some new six hole rims done in 3D and then made a mold for casting the number needed for the build.  The universal joints are also 3D printed purchased through Shapeways.  Fenders, hood and hood sides, running boards, wheel hubs and tires are all resin castings using RTV mold rubber and two-part liquid resin.  Soldered brass was used for the front and rear springs.  A combination of brass and plastic makes up the rear shackles for the front springs.  The split differential in red will also be cast for the axles.  CCKW's used either the split type or banjo type depending on the date of manufacture.  There is a small mold for the wheel centers and two headlight castings made from a turned aluminum master.

I had those done since I have not taken the plunge myself.  The results were pretty good.  I used the two 3D pieces for a master and made an RTV mold to cast a full set of 10.  Here's the result with the frame up on wheels.  The front axle still needs steering knuckles and all but the back tandems are done except for the torque rods.  The castings were drilled out for 6 lugs using fusion beads for the lug nuts.  Wheels do not have the retainer rings yet.

Got an issue with the front track on this build.  How's it measured; to the outside of the tire, the center of the tire or the inside of the tire?  Anybody have an answer?

Made a bit of progress since the last post.  I'll let the photos speak for themselves.  Some real fiddly things along the way that were frustrating for a while but a little perseverance (stubbornness) got the issues worked out.  The front track was figured out so that other parts of the build could continue.

CoF, sir I must say that your builds are simply amazing in both their detail and accuracy.  Needless to say the finished products of your builds truly look like they could actually be taken out and issued into the field to help our boys do their important work.  Simply the attention to the amount of detail is the point where your builds go from "making a model" to true art!  Just like Cat, I really enjoy watching all of the amazing builders here progress in their work.  Some VERY talented people on this forum showing those of us with less talent/patience their amazing works!  I, for one, love seeing all of them.  Thanks for taking the time to post your WIP's, and to everyone else, a big thank you to you all as well.

Work has been progressing on the cab and front of the build.  Some things have been slow going like the windshield and front fenders.  I built 3 windshields before being satisfied with it.  The first one was simply too big and clunky and the second was was too tall.  Like Baby Bear's porridge the third one came out "juuuust right".  The grill guard in front is mounted temporarily so I can adjust the hood sides and then get the fenders squared away.  Wheels and tires are painted.  Wheels with Testors olive drab and tires with Tamiya rubber black.  Both are rattle can paints.  The cab sides and rear need some rivet detail which will be added using some HO scale decal rivets from Micro-Mark.  They are waterslide just like regular decals but are slightly raised.  Even when painted over the only thing you see are the small raised "rivet heads".

Got some major fitting done today with the hood sides and fenders set in position. The frame is now painted which makes some of the next work a bit easier.  Headlight buckets are cast and set in place temporarily.  Hood hinges have been pared down some to more scale size.  Tie down hooks are added to the cab sides and rear.

A bit more progress on the build.  Tires and wheels were completely re-done.  The first ones were way too wide.   Tires on the real trucks were really skinny but the ones I had reminded me of beach buggy tires.  Now it's on to the cab interior before trying anything for the bodywork.

I looked back at the tires to see what you were talking about regarding the size.  I do like the new ones! 

 

Is it crazy that I really love the grill work on this truck? 😁

Cab work has been the subject of the last couple of days.  The dashboard was made up using sheet plastic stock, common pins and a decal for the gages.  The windshield opening brackets were installed.  Seats were made of a material similar to Renshape, thread, plastic sheet stock and rod stock.  I took a break from the truck build long enough to make an M1 that will be mounted in the cab after it is painted.  It was made of plastic strip stock, brass tubing and strip stock and brass wire.  The small brown strip of paper beside it will become the sling strap.  The steering wheel is dark red because wood was used in later versions of the truck.  It needs to be toned down a bit.
