THAT GUY Posted January 31, 2023 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2023 Hello all, I found this leather cartridge box at an antique mall today. I recognized the pattern so I took a chance on it. From research, it appears to me this was previously a USN cartridge box that was tarred over and restamped with 'N.G.' for militia units? Note there are small federal stamps on either side into the tarring material. The rear hanger has been damaged but all else is intact. It seems close to the Civil War USN model but is missing the extra half moon pouch on the interior. If anyone can confirm or redirect me to the right answer it would be appreciated! Thank you. Maxrobot Posted July 30, 2023 Share #4 Posted July 30, 2023 I have an identical cartridge box - no cypher visible though and in just as poor condition.(Tarrred finish drooping and all) The wood block takes .50-70 cartridges so that gives us a time frame. the New York national Guard used .50-70 Remington Rolling Block rifles from the early 1970s to the 1898 Spanish American War. It is not an item used by the U.S. Army though.
