I picked up these two plastic cased Army Commendation Medals for $10 at my local flea market today. I am not familiar with the time period this type case was used. But if the engraving card is original to the group, I assume it must have been issued after 1960.

Nice medals, well done, I thought this case dated to the late 50's but as you see it's dated 1960.

Interesting. I never realised you could request your rank to be engraved. Explains one I have with service number, full name(s)and rank added.

Actually, they would only engrave the name. The rest of the information was for administrative purposes.

Thanks. I have seen some with ranks inscribed on them, or with initials instead of first name, so I assume these ones would be engraved privately or at a local level, rather than 'officially' official named examples?

The one I referred to is the following. Presumably this was unofficial/local impressing of recipient's details? It would have been issued during the mid-1960s to a paratrooper officer.

Cheers

Richard

Those cases are usually seen from the 60s through 70s. Could have possibly been used in the late 50s

I never realized they had plastic cases. Never seen one.

Here is a plastic cased Army Commendation Medal awarded to CWO Warren E. Beckwith in 1951.

I found it interesting the citation reads Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant.

Yes. The award was originally created as the Commendation Ribbon in 1946 and was originally only represented by the ribbon itself. In 1949, the actual medal was created. However, rather than simply renaming it the Army Commendation Medal, which would seem to make perfect sense, it was initially given the awkward name of Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant. In 1960, it was finally renamed the more appropriate Army Commendation Medal.

Not always. Bot my Uncle John's Meritorious Service Medal and ARCOM have his name and SSN engraved on them. However, these were awarded in 1974, so regs may have changed at some point.
