Salvage Sailor Posted January 15, 2023 #1 Posted January 15, 2023 Any of you Zoomie collectors have any info on these Pacific Air Forces Weapons Meet competitions? Were they interservice, i.e. open to the USN groups or solely to the USAF? This came from a member of Fleet Composite Squadron Five (FLECOMPRON 5), NAS Cubi Point, PI though they may be unrelated.
Randy Posted January 15, 2023 #2 Posted January 15, 2023 FB 1961 was held at Clark AB, Philippines. This was a meeting of air forces from Pacific area allies, like the Japanese, Thais, Aussies, etc. Not sure on Navy, could have been but there is not a ton of info on these. There were at least 3 meets, 59-61. Here's my 1959 one, which was held at Naha AB in Okinawa. Japan made on felt. Randy
Salvage Sailor Posted January 15, 2023 Author #3 Posted January 15, 2023 Thanks Randy, Found this online today to add to the discussion.
Randy Posted January 16, 2023 #4 Posted January 16, 2023 That one looks pretty modern to me, but I bet they copied an original. Good to know the Navy and Marines were part of this as well. Randy
Salvage Sailor Posted January 16, 2023 Author #5 Posted January 16, 2023 I also believe it's a repop and agree that it's most likely taken from an original piece, thus my post.
Guest Forgotten Squadron Posted January 18, 2023 #6 Posted January 18, 2023 Good morning! I'm actually writing a bit about this in my dissertation: The "Flying Brothers" Pacific Fighter Weapons Meet was a "noncompetitive" international exercise held at Clark Air Force Base, Philippines, in 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1963 (they skipped 1962 due to the Laos Crisis). It was jointly hosted by the US 405th Fighter Wing and the Philippine Air Force with live fire demonstrations occurring on the Crow Valley Gunnery Range northwest of Clark. Participants included the USAF, USN, PAF, ROCAF, ROKAF, and RTAF with observers from Australia, Indonesia, and other countries in the region. Randy, if you don't mind, it would actually be really helpful to get a high-resolution scan (600 dpi) of your 1959 felt patch for my research. -Dan
Salvage Sailor Posted January 18, 2023 Author #7 Posted January 18, 2023 Fabulous info Dan, You fully answered my initial question and now the FLECOMPRON 5 Cubi Point USN/USAF connection fits. Thanks for taking the time to post and welcome to the forum. Feel free to poke about and ask questions, there are many very knowledgeable members who are more than willing to help out with your research. There ya go... Aloha
Randy Posted January 20, 2023 #8 Posted January 20, 2023 Dan- as requested, hi-res scan of the FB patches sent to your email. The patch you posted is a modern remake if you don't know already. As SS said, thanks for the info! Randy
