LE LOUP DES MERS Posted December 23, 2022 Share #1 Posted December 23, 2022 Thought I share this early SAPI plate, picked this up about two weeks ago, I ended up only playing $100. It's an early SAPI plate dated April 2003 and it's in pretty good condition. Looks like the lettering on the plate was spray painted on. The texture is also bumpy unlike the later ones which are soft and smooth. It's getting hard to find the early SAPI plates. I definitely don't find them as often as I use to. I remember years ago, going to different gun shows and surplus stores and seeing stacks of these early plates. I'll be adding this to the Iraq/Afghanistan display in my living room (I'll make a post about the display ones I finish it). Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
mohawkALSE Posted December 23, 2022 Share #2 Posted December 23, 2022 Its not an early one, the earlier ones had 1998 contract numbers and were labeled as a Ballistic Upgrade Plate on the label. There was some other earlier ones too that had 2000 contracts. Id call this 03 contract a last era of the SAPI plates as the first ESAPI plates had 04 or 06 contracts. Where did you see that mentioned for Air Warrior? The Army ETM for Air Warrior has 2 lists for Ballistic Upgrade Plates, one for SAPI and one for ESAPI and both have been the standard NSNs for those plates. For each of those it lists XS thru XL as well, not just 3 sizes. Curious that might have been something older and outdated per the ETM since that plate is 04 dated and the ETM I have is from 2013, but as I said still lists legacy Air Warrior stuff and the older SAPIs Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The NSNs for the SAPI plates listed are the ones that were common to see made by Ceredyne that had the original USZA 1998 contract numbers that were originally seen with the SPEAR BALCS vests but used later as well. This is the list of Ballistic Upgrade Plates listed for the Air Warrior Flexible Body Armor vest: The NSNs ending with the 73## are the ESAPI and the NSNs ending with 10## are the SAPI. Only info I can seem to find regarding these plates to give any specifics to them is they were made from Aluminum Oxide which differed from some other plates. Someone mentioned "Defender" was like a cheaper line of hard armor made by Ceradyne. I know some older hard plates were sometimes made of that Aluminum Oxide, one version of the old aircrew chickenplate armor vests used Aluminum Oxide plates.
