kfields Posted November 20, 2022 #1 Posted November 20, 2022 I picked up this little pamphlet at the gun show yesterday. Dates to the late 50's. Just thought it was interesting. Kim
gwb123 Posted November 20, 2022 #2 Posted November 20, 2022 This sub has an interesting history. "Bang received six battle stars for her World War II service. She is officially credited with sinking eight Japanese merchant ships totaling 20,177 tons." She also survived a number of depth charge attacks. Please see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Bang
kfields Posted November 20, 2022 Author #3 Posted November 20, 2022 Yeah I saw that. I read that her first skipper was awarded 4 Navy Crosses. Could that be true?
Salvage Sailor Posted November 22, 2022 #4 Posted November 22, 2022 Indeed it is.... Antone Renkl Gallaher Navy Cross Citations
BANGMilitaria Posted January 8, 2023 #5 Posted January 8, 2023 Nice find! My great grandfather was on the Bang as a torpedoman’s mate on all 7 war patrols. I’ll have to make a detailed post on his service as well as the various artifacts of his that I’ve inherited. One of them is a photo album covering his entire service with some photos taken at sea. Fascinating stuff.
Navy87Guy Posted January 9, 2023 #6 Posted January 9, 2023 Interestingly, two of the subs that LT Brumsted served in (CUTLASS and TUSK) are still in service in Taiwan! 😲
