That's a historic submarine, USS STINGRAY holds the record for WWII war patrols — sixteen — the most by any American submarine Crew of the STINGRAY at their 1945 Victory Party, from my Tom Swift grouping (Gunners mate who made seven war patrols aboard Stingray)

I did not know the statistics as far as their war patrols so that's interesting. Thanks.

Chopper526 Posted January 5 #41 Posted January 5 I'm looking for any information anyone may have on this ashtray. My Dad gave it to me before he passed away. He did not serve on the Arizona but was in the Navy at the end of WWII. I've not seen another or been able to search one out. Was it possibly on the Arizona at one time or created as a memorial piece? Any thoughts?
Salvage Sailor Posted January 6 Author #42 Posted January 6 Not a memorial piece. Souvenir ashtray from her (2nd) European cruise in 1919 USS ARIZONA Leading the battle fleet during maneuvers on 13 April 1919. Naval History and Heritage Command - USS ARIZONA (BB-39) USS Arizona, a 31,400 ton Pennsylvania class battleship built at the New York Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York, was commissioned in October 1916. After shakedown off the east coast and in the Caribbean, she operated out of Norfolk, Virginia, until November 1918, when she made a brief cruise to France. She made a second cruise to European waters in April-June 1919, proceeding as far east as Turkey. During much of 1920-21, the battleship was in the western Atlantic and Caribbean areas, but paid two visits to Peru in 1921 in her first excursions into the Pacific. From August 1921 until 1929, Arizona was based in Southern California, making occasional cruises to the Caribbean or Hawaii during major U.S. Fleet exercises.

Thanks so much for the reply Salvage Sailor. It sure makes sense to me and gives me a little something more to investigate, I never had the chance to ask my Dad where he got it. Do you think it was something available in ship's store or on base?
Norfolknative Posted March 23 #44 Posted March 23 Hello all. I came across this site and topic quite randomly as I was looking up a few treasured memorabilia items when moving things around here. So, heres my contribution to this topic. In honor of my grandfather, Capt. Earl T. Hydeman (pictured). Most submariners of the era will know him best for his USS Sea Dog (SS 401) experience as chronicled in the books "Hellcats Of The Sea" and "Hellcats" and the movie "Hellcats Of The Navy". I have a marvelous 6 page typed (by him) synopsis of the Sea Dog during that period. So, here are a 2 of the butt station, ashtray items he received. Both in excellent condition. The butt station is from his service as XO on the USS Tuna, when he was a Lieutenant, and the ashtray from his service at COM SUB DEV I hope they add to the memories shared here.
