24th_infantry Posted November 9, 2022 Share #1 Posted November 9, 2022 Got this recently out of NY from the vet's son. Herbert Yarkon landed on Red Beach on Iwo Jima. He was wounded March 4th and was evacuated to the hospital ship. Two days later he returned to his unit and was wounded again on March 13th. The grouping consists of his type I purple heart (plus some replacement medals), unit photo taken somewhere in the PTO with the guys wearing their camo helmet covers, scrap book of newspaper clippings from the war and a photo album depicting battlefields and dead Japanese soldiers. There is also a small Japanese prayer book, a piece of his HBT he wore on Iwo and a Japanese patch (possibly worn on the sun helmet to identify the unit). Due to the graphic nature of the photos and the racial slurs written by them I will not be posting them. However if you want to see them privately let me know.
