K rations & personal items

Hey guys,
Thought I'd post some of the personal equipment I picked up to go along with a M1928 haversack display. The leather travel kit is just a generic period piece from the '30s. I filled it with wartime stuff I found after some research.
The Wehrmacht pack of cigarettes was too cool to resist  even though it might not be consistent with what you'd find in a GI's PE. Maybe something that would be taken from a German POW.
Tell me what you think and where I'm inaccurate!
Always looking for original ration components and PE,
Thanks!

Nice collection Joey! I like the idea of putting toiletries in the civvy kit. I'm sure that was popular Stateside, but for an overseas impression you'll want one of the numerous variations of ditty bags or toiletry rolls available to soldiers. Also, I may be wrong but I think the sun cream, foot powder, and camo paint are all Vietnam vintage. The insecticide powder may be too, but have to see the contract/spec markings. Do you reenact or just collect?

Thanks a lot!

Hoped to eventually set up a display of a GI's personal equipment with a haversack (not on that flimsy little table!). I did pick up a roll up ditty since then but couldn't fit too much inside. This one is period and in good shape (and $8), so it made sense till the right kit shows up.

I'll be sure to take a close look at those tins you mentioned. The dealer did say they were WWII original, and I certainly want to keep it all legitimate. Maybe I'll post a photo of specs for your opinion.

I don't reenact. Wouldn't think of using that toothbrush 🙂.

Managed to pick up a full k ration supper unit since then too! I need to keep it simple though. Can only get what fits into the M1928.

Regards

Thanx! Glad you like them. Deffinitely get involved, the hunt is tons of fun.

I'm involved in education so I put some things together as a sort of traveling exhibit. The jewish theme is just cause I'm jewish and I thought those stuff were cool 🙂

Crazy though, because I'm realizing now that since I took those photos about a month ago, I've made a few changes. I'll post a few new ones later.

I exchanged the sewing kit for a od "style king" and picked up two army issue soaps (just thought they were more appropriate for a late war grouping).

Hi guys, here are the changes I made to my grouping. Not many, but maybe collectors can use this for reference. The changes are more appropriate to late-war.

Couldn't pass up the Wehrmacht cigarettes though American smokes were much more popular. Doubt GIs were crazy about picking these up.

Everything's original as well as sealed!

In my years of research and participating in living history events, I put together the items that well equipped officer traveling by jeep should always have available.

The first set of pictures depicts the officers musette bag filled with all necessary supplies for times when one might be separated from their main personal items and possibly away from their unit.  The Officer's Guide Book provided the inventory to be accumulated and stressed that the officer should never be separated from his bag.

The second set of pictures (in the following posting) provides ration supplies plus a m1942 Mod (single burner) stove and fuel along with a few extras to make life a bit easier to bear.

The final set of pictures is in reference to Ernie Pyle's writings.  He suggested the every jeep ought to have a small cache of food items to tide the occupant(s) over if ever separated from their unit.

Hey, Quartermaster!

Your collection's just breathtaking!! Simply incredible stuff!

I'll be using this as a reference to expand my own collection. Doesn't get better than that..

Thanks for posting!

I guess your second bag follows theme of the pacific theater (considering the food bag and the Tropical Hershey bar)?

Just wondering, Did officers generally carry two musette bags?

Quartermaster

You are correct - my main interest is in the PTO.

My thoughts are that the possession of two musette bags is a fairly rare thing.

But, as my personal area of interest is as a Captain in a Quartermaster Corps Truck company (recreating what was my dad's service experience) who has assigned a jeep and driver, then there was ample resources to carry extra goodies.  And following the wildly held notion, Quartermasters had first "dibs" on all the supplies coming in and, according to quite a few vets I have encountered, QMs "stole" all the good stuff (Lucky Strikes, Cokes, boots etc) and left the rest for the front line troops!.  My living history displays usually have Hershey bars and a crate of Coca Cola only to hear (half in jest) old vets gripes that they fought the entire war and rarely saw a Hershey bar much less a Coke!

As an aside - I carry the second bag primarily with a working M42 stove so I can heat up coffee in the field.  It is also great for hot water for morning shaves!

Would anyone know when accessory packets appeared on the scene?

I've seen plenty of Vietnam era packets but never any Korea or WWII, like I see quartermaster has.

Wish I knew more about that

Thanks for the info. Looks like it was meant to accompany the C, which didn't include accessories the K ration had.

That's a great site you posted. I know Harry. Great guy. Very knowledgeable and very helpful fellow.

I'd love to add one of those packets to my display
