USMarineCorps Posted October 21, 2022 Share #1 Posted October 21, 2022 Hi all, I recently got this PH in a grouping and noticed the paint started flaking off. Is there any method I could apply to prevent any further flaking? Thanks in advance for your advice! Fred
Allan H. Posted October 21, 2022 Share #2 Posted October 21, 2022 This is occurring due to the fact that the paint was added to a copper insert. Copper is almost impossible to keep painted. It is rather common to see happen. I will tell you that there is not really anything that you can do to the medal to keep it from happening. The best thing you can do is to try to keep the medal at a constant temperature and try not to handle it. The good news is that collectors are aware of the situation and it doesn't hurt the value as much as you might think. What will hurt the value is to try to glue flakes back in place or to repaint the insert. Adding a clear coat will also hurt the value. Just leave it alone. USMarineCorps Posted October 21, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted October 21, 2022 Thank you so much for your quick reply and advice. I had not come across this type before as my other PHM either have the plastic insert or an enameled heart. I take it this one was made by Rex Products? It is numbered in the 3xxxxx range.
