Chris Posted October 16, 2022 #1 Posted October 16, 2022 Just wondering if anyone knew which "M" state this comes from? I have done some research, but nothing difinitive. Thanks for any help!
patches Posted October 16, 2022 #2 Posted October 16, 2022 There are no states then and now that use just the first letter of their State right, in the old days they were Mass for Massachusetts, Minn for Minnesota, Miss for Mississippi Md for Maryland Me for Maine etc. So could this M.N.G. simply be for Machine Gun?????
Chris Posted October 16, 2022 Author #3 Posted October 16, 2022 I have owned two similar medals with "I.N.G.", one of which came with some Indiana National Guard material. The other came with nothing and I think I inquired about that one on here too, but got no replies. I'm not entirely sure that we can say no states ever did it. I agree it's unusual that only the first letter was used, but the numbering - "Third Inf" - is also a common N.G. infantry regiment number from the period. Hopefully, others will chime in.
Chris Posted October 18, 2022 Author #4 Posted October 18, 2022 Here's another single letter ("I.N.G.") example that I have from 1887. I think it's an Idaho piece, but am not sure.
patches Posted October 19, 2022 #5 Posted October 19, 2022 Curious that they would use only the first letter of the state.
Chris Posted October 19, 2022 Author #6 Posted October 19, 2022 It is odd. Makes it really hard to figure out which state issued them!
gearhead1968 Posted October 19, 2022 #7 Posted October 19, 2022 I collect the WWI era and I am from Missouri, I have never see anything like this for Missouri.
Fred Borgmann Posted February 8, 2023 #8 Posted February 8, 2023 Definitely Minnesota. Number 45 in the Williams book on Minnesota.

Klaatu Posted November 26, 2025 #10 Posted November 26, 2025 Fred, I saw another article that you wrote several years ago regarding the 1928 President's Guard medal from Brule Wisconsin. I posted this about a month ago trying to get more information about the medal that I have. Please let me know if you have any information about this rare medal. I believe there were only 90 presented.
