These were worn in pairs, your version for the blues, in green/red for the alphas. I would suppose they were also worn on the tan uniform but I have never actually seen a set. C. Roelens Posted March 3, 2009 Share #7 Posted March 3, 2009 Chris is correct. I've had a couple of documented WWI 5th Marine Brigade uniforms with these chevrons sewn on both sleeves. If there was a patch on the upper left sleeve the PFC chevron would be sewn below it. I've seen them only on uniforms dated from 1918-1920. According to John Stacey's book, "U.S. Navy Marks(And Others) On Marine Uniforms", the rifles on the khaki version were originally brown. Subsequent to WW1, the rifles were changed from brown to green. When I learned many years later that this was the insignia of a P.F.C. way back when, it became clear that it obviously was a heraldic decision to incorporate the old rank.
