Is this the insignia used for Marine PFC's prior to WW1...? Many thanks! s/f Darrell

Correct! These were worn in pairs, your version for the blues, in green/red for the alphas. I would suppose they were also worn on the tan uniform but I have never actually seen a set.

As mark said, it sure is! They do exist in tan with green rifles, I know I've seen a pair for sale somewhere recently....hmmmm.

Seems to me I remember someone having a choice set of blues with a set of those PFC patches sewn on! jeal0001.gif

Guys,

These were actually instituted in late 1918 and only used for a short time. So technically, they are WW1 and just after.

Best wishes!

Chris is correct. I've had a couple of documented WWI 5th Marine Brigade uniforms with these chevrons sewn on both sleeves. If there was a patch on the upper left sleeve the PFC chevron would be sewn below it. I've seen them only on uniforms dated from 1918-1920.

Here are the three color variations I have. According to John Stacey's book, "U.S. Navy Marks(And Others) On Marine Uniforms", the rifles on the khaki version were originally brown. Subsequent to WW1, the rifles were changed from brown to green. John Stacey also states that this Private, First Class insignia was replaced in 1926 by a single chevron worn on both sleeves.

Back in 1959 when the USMC introduced its new and still current rank system, I did not understand why they used crossed rifles in the insignia. When I learned many years later that this was the insignia of a P.F.C. way back when, it became clear that it obviously was a heraldic decision to incorporate the old rank.

I didn't even think about that until now, but it is quite fitting and very cool.

Thanks to Fritz, I had no chance to research them and did not know they were from two different periods.
