Kolekole Pass, Oahu

Kolekole Pass is a mountain pass at an elevation of 504m (1,653ft) above the sea level, located on the island of Oahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands, in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, USA.

1368070739_KoleKolePass003.jpg.13b5d48eeca76629703e59a5afde024a.jpg

The pass is located in the Waianae Mountain Range. The road to the summit through the mountains connecting central and west Oahu is called Kole Kole Pass Road. It’s asphalted but very steep. Access to the road and the pass is restricted to military personnel, but is occasionally opened to the public during emergencies. Heavy rains and rock slides can close the road anytime.

Originally a path of crushed lava rock and red dirt, the paved road was begun in 1937 by the 3rd Engineers. There are sheer drops virtually along the entire route and enough hairpins to make anyone dizzy.

My wife insisted we drive this road during our honeymoon in the 90s as she had grown up living on Naval Magazine Lualualei. It was pretty tight, for sure!

Remember well how spooky it was to drive up the road to the Kole Kole Pass late at night while on patrol alone in an MP vehicle. Lots of stories about that place being haunted. That rock was especially creepy….

Kole Kole Pass Road field construction photos - not the best resolution, taken by the contractors as the roadbed was being laid under the direction of the US Third Engineer Regiment.

Preparing for Blasting - note the original single path 'road' snaking it's way to the Westside and the ocean.  This was widened and the shoulders were hammered and blasted away.

Now we've got some elbow room, just have to clear the debris and lay the roadbed

I drove that road many a time in the 70's  I was stationed at Naval Magazine Lualualei Waikele Branch near Waipahu. I was member of a Net Team that responded to certain emergencies and this was one of the roads we took for training exercises
