usmc1981 Posted October 7, 2022 Share #1 Posted October 7, 2022 PFC 5th Marine Regiment, CA 1943. This image came from the album of Sgt. Nicholas Roderick, and although the dealer thought it was Roderick, as well as it would make sense only the owner would pay the expense of a colorized photo, I would like to analyze the image with your help. Roderick joined the 5th Marines in 1939 as a principal musician K 3/5. In Oct. 1940 he was a musician first class K 3/5 which would support the rank in the photo, and the French fourragère. In Oct. 1941, Roderick was transferred as a Field Music CPL in D 1/7, and by April he was with the 18th Provisional Company stationed in Brazil. Later promoted to Sgt. In the 18th, most likely he earned 1 campaign star in April 1945 as a Sgt. with the 3rd Medical battalion. The PFC in this image is wearing French fourragère, PUC, American Defense 1 star, and Asiatic w/2 campaign stars. It is my belief the components of this image discount it being Roderick, but most likely a friend of Roderick’s in the 5th Regiment. An early war Marine, most likely taken of a Guadalcanal veteran of the 5th Regiment. Although unidentified, still a pleasing image of a colorized 5th Regiment Marine. Can anyone add to this assessment? Are Marines of the 5th and 6th Regiments allowed to wear the French fourragère, once they are transferred to another unit? All help is greatly appreciated.
