The book is a great read too. Granville – Tales and Tail Spins from a Flyer’s Diary. I expect the title came partially from the Ellington Field camp newspaper that was named Tale Spins. The book can be located as a free download in lots of places. Gutterson or Guttersen as his family was known was from Minnesota. He attended the School of Military Aeronautics in Austin, Texas, in January 1918, and went from there to Ellington Field in Houston. He was one of the first bombing and gunnery instructors at the gunnery range in San Leon, Texas, which is just south of Ellington Field. He died while in service at Ellington Field Hospital of pneumonia on December 4, 1918.

Hi All,

I could use a little help authenticating the wings pictured below as I am not 100% sure what I have, if they are real or what they might be worth. They are part of a named tunic (JW Gerard - unable to find him in any of the usual sources, WoH, NE Aviators etc.) dated to October 1918. The tunic lacks overseas stripes, so this pilot likely did not make it to France.

A big thank you in advance to all who take a look, as well as those who reply to share their knowledge and expertise.

Dave

Hello Dave,

Thank you for sharing images of your BMA (Bombing Military Aviator) badge. Potentially, you might be sharing images of an authentic and extremely rare aviation badge. I don't see any obvious red flags in the modest images you've posted so far. But if you want a real definitive answer as to its authenticity from our many well informed collectors, I'm afraid you'll need to add a few clear and close-up images to make that determination.

A close-up of the bomb, both front and back, as well as some clear images of the "STERLING" mark, possible hallmark and the pin/catch findings would be a tremendous help in the evaluation.

Kind regards... and welcome to the Forum.

I think much better close up photos front and back are needed for the knowledgeable wing experts to really evaluate your wing.Scotty

Bill and Rusty,

I have much higher quality photos, but this forum severely limits image size and I was forced to make them much smaller than I would have liked. If anyone has a work around, please let me know and I will post higher res images. I will however upload some cropped images highlighting the features of interest.

Hi All,

Here is your makers mark. I can supply hi res photos through personal email to interested parties. First though, I want to make sure that the wings are legit as I have no interest in passing on garbage to anyone.
