Unusual WW2 .30 cal ammo box

This WW2 .30 cal ammo box appears to have an unusual latch (see pic). Any idea what this was for? Perhaps for mounting on armor or a vehicle?

The  second latch which is used to mount the can to a Browning Machine Gun tripod.

You often don;t see this latch on the standard WW2 .30 cal boxes I encounter. Was this for attaching to a special kind of tripod, like that found on an armored vehicle, or something like that?

these were used late WWII and yes to attach to tripod's

It attaches specifically to the M1917A1 tripod cradle.
