Harsh punishments in the California Volunteers

I don’t know, in the same scenario, how formal punishment would look today; but I can tell you that the unanimous sentiment on sleeping on guard duty - when I was in - was very serious.  
 

Beyond UCMJ proceedings, even on an FTX, that was not something that your fellow soldiers ever forgot / forgave - and rightly so IMO.

 

You’re being entrusted with the safety of the men in your unit, especially at night.

Its traditionally been a very serious offense. One of my service buddies in Vietnam saw a ARVN officer come upon one of his sleeping, and shot him. Said that got some attention.
