LostDutchman Posted July 16, 2013 #152 Posted July 16, 2013 I had this piece walk in this morning. I haven't seen this maker before.
LostDutchman Posted July 16, 2013 #154 Posted July 16, 2013 According to my digital calipers it's 3.109in
ghost Posted July 16, 2013 #155 Posted July 16, 2013 Geesh, all I had to do was read title!!! Still a nice wing
tomcatter Posted July 16, 2013 #157 Posted July 16, 2013 Very nice wings! Luxenberg was a top class maker.
bschwartz Posted July 16, 2013 #158 Posted July 16, 2013 Just a clarification, Luxenberg wasn't a "maker". They contracted their work out to different manufacturers and had them stamp the Luxenberg name on the items. First pattern (like the one shown) and second pattern were made by Blackinton and the third pattern were made by A.E. Co. Great wings. The Air Crew are actually harder to find in this pattern than the pilot wings in my experience.
Insigina Hunter Posted July 16, 2013 #159 Posted July 16, 2013 very nice wings. Luxenberg is my main collecting focus and this one is a beauty
Jack's Son Posted July 17, 2013 #160 Posted July 17, 2013 You are having way to many NICE things walking through the door lately!!!
mtnman Posted July 17, 2013 #162 Posted July 17, 2013 Absolutely beautiful! As Bob so rightly said, these wings are more difficult to find than the pilot wings by far. Luxenberg wings remind me, each time I look upon them, of the plate armor indicative of medieval knights as the blacksmiths and armorers became adept at mimicking God's natural handiwork on the scales and "armor" of animals like alligators, snakes and armadillos for example. You have an excellent wing and if you are a cleaner as some of us are, the black patching which looks so prolific disappears completely as the buildup of dirt and oxidation are cleared with careful cleaning. I have a Lux Navigator which just looked like it had not only been in the war but fought the war and had a few purple hearts, with oxidation and buildup from the navigator keeping it out in the open air after the war. The build up on the wings over the past 67 years was amazing. The men typically kept their insignia in good clean shape as these men and officers commanded respect and honored the responsibility and privilege given them so I like to keep my wings in that tradition. Here is my wing a year after cleaning....it was so bad they were going to scrap it.
mtnman Posted July 17, 2013 #165 Posted July 17, 2013 The back of Lux 1st model wings are unique in that they can have divots indentions and strange patination patterns all over the face of the rear and up in the grooves of the rear shoulders but that classic heavy and solid pin assembly is a good tell on authenticity along with the unmatched artistic quality....
tomcatter Posted July 17, 2013 #166 Posted July 17, 2013 Wow! I never seen before the Lux Navigator wings, they are really beautiful!
Costa Posted July 24, 2013 #167 Posted July 24, 2013 they sold for 495.00!!!!!! if they are that scarce then i guess the price wasn't bad--------------
cea1274 Posted October 31, 2013 #168 Posted October 31, 2013 luxenberg 2" pilot wing pin back any info on these
tomcatter Posted October 31, 2013 #169 Posted October 31, 2013 Very nice WWII wings by a top class Brand. Note that Luxenberg wings were manifactured by Blackinton. Blackinton and Luxenberg items are highly collectable and good quality.
B-17Guy Posted October 31, 2013 #170 Posted October 31, 2013 Remember that only the second pattern Luxenberg was made by Blackinton. The first pattern (pictured) was made by an unknown maker and the third pattern is thought to be made by AE Co. John
tomcatter Posted October 31, 2013 #172 Posted October 31, 2013 @John: thank you, I didn't know that! @Costa: 100% agree, it's a beauty!
pfrost Posted October 31, 2013 #173 Posted October 31, 2013 Remember that only the second pattern Luxenberg was made by Blackinton. The first pattern (pictured) was made by an unknown maker and the third pattern is thought to be made by AE Co. John Are you sure about that John? I thought it was pretty much dogma that the first and second patterns were made by Blackinton (not just the second). Patrick
Insigina Hunter Posted October 31, 2013 #174 Posted October 31, 2013 Love those Luxenbergs can PM me with any questions you have on these. Luxenberg and KG Luke's are the focus of my insignia collection. These look legit and if that's is as far as the pin swings open thats even better, nice find.
Insigina Hunter Posted October 31, 2013 #175 Posted October 31, 2013 Are you sure about that John? I thought it was pretty much dogma that the first and second patterns were made by Blackinton (not just the second). Patrick I concur, 1st and 2nd by blackington 3rd by AE Co.
