B-17Guy Posted June 19, 2013 #126 Posted June 19, 2013 Very nice second pattern Luxenberg. That badge was struck by Blackinton during WWII. The die was mostly likely from the 1930's. Fyi, Blackinton used that die to strike the same badge for Bond and Pasquale a well. Bond link in forum- http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/145882-bond-pilot-wing/?hl=bond John
David B Posted June 19, 2013 #128 Posted June 19, 2013 Thanks guys, much appreciated! I wasn't 100% about the wings because while the wing fletching details are very clear I thought the horizontal lines in the shield were a little weak, please see below... Btw, is it a feature of this manufacturer to hand finish the edges of their wings? I noticed on this badge the edges are buffed smooth with only a couple of places showing die shear marks.
B-17Guy Posted June 20, 2013 #130 Posted June 20, 2013 Wing looks fine to me. Here is a close up of mine. John
David B Posted June 20, 2013 #135 Posted June 20, 2013 Thanks John for the comparison photos (beautiful wing mate) and thanks again for the comments guys! It's my first Lux so had nothing to compare it against and it's in a different league to my other wings, got a little paranoid with over examination of the piece I think :-) I managed to pick it up from eBay.uk where the seller only knew he had a pilot wing, it was advertised as a "USAF" sterling silver pilot wings and he was unsure of the maker mark (he didn't know what it spelt and he'd never obviously heard of Luxenberg before because he thought it said "Linburgh". Anyway, I won it for less than $50usd (cost me £30). What do these type Lux's usually realise? Cheers Dave
B-17Guy Posted June 20, 2013 #136 Posted June 20, 2013 You did exceptionally well with your buy. Usually that wing sells in the $400 range. I saw one two weeks ago at a show for $450. Here is a stunning Blackinton on Dan Griffin's web-site for $295, which I can't believe no one has bought. http://griffinmilitaria.com/cgi-bin/imcart/display.cgi?item_id=1832&cat=37&page=1&search=&since=&status=&title= As you have found, they go for more or less, but I think $400 is a good base line. Collectors seem to melt when they see a first pattern Luxenberg, but I think the second pattern is a much better looking wing. John
David B Posted June 20, 2013 #137 Posted June 20, 2013 $400!! Wow, I did get a bargain! I like it even more now As much as this is a beautiful wing, I'm still partial to an Amcraft
Insigina Hunter Posted June 20, 2013 #138 Posted June 20, 2013 Beautiful wing! wish i had seen this one. The most I've seen this particular pattern sell for was $361 and $366 they usually average in the $200-$300 range when SOLD, but people usually will ASK in the $400-$500 range.
graham Posted July 3, 2013 #139 Posted July 3, 2013 I have these two collar insgnia by Luxenberg. The one on the left is a little larger with insised hallmark Luxenberg -10k GF STERLING. The other in more typical size has a raised hallmark Luxenberg New York. I am wondering if there are any more variations. Please post them here if you have any. Graham
tomcatter Posted July 4, 2013 #143 Posted July 4, 2013 Very nice insignias Graham! I think the larger one may be a cap badge.
Sabrejet Posted July 4, 2013 #144 Posted July 4, 2013 Very nice pieces Graham. Shame it's not a matched pair! The one on the left is particularly well detailed. I've got quite a few winged-prop devices myself, but alas no Lux's!
Insigina Hunter Posted July 4, 2013 #145 Posted July 4, 2013 Left looks to be blackington made example and right would be AE Co, just my two cents Love those lux's
Insigina Hunter Posted July 4, 2013 #146 Posted July 4, 2013 I have a matched pair like the single you have shown on the right. I have been on the look out for an example like the one you've shown on the left. Here are the two other variations I have (only in singles)
graham Posted July 4, 2013 #147 Posted July 4, 2013 Thanks for the replies. Interesting thoughts on the manufacturers. Insignia Hunter, Is that some original Luxenberg packaging you have there ? Anyone know when Luxenberg went out of business ? I know they were arround long enough to produce blue uniforms for the USAF but beond that I am not sure. Graham
Insigina Hunter Posted July 5, 2013 #148 Posted July 5, 2013 Good eye graham that is the top of my boxed luxenberg belt. Just found this for your viewing pleasure.
graham Posted July 6, 2013 #149 Posted July 6, 2013 Thanks Joe, 'Air Force nickel buckle' another indication of Luxenberg post war activities. Do you know when they closed down ? Graham
WPAFB Posted July 6, 2013 #150 Posted July 6, 2013 I have a letter from Morry to a customer about a problem dated 12 July 1954. I also have a 1952 price list. So at least we know he was in business in 1954. Anyone have something with a latter date?
