Bodes Posted August 17, 2022 #2 Posted August 17, 2022 Since they have the same ribbons, I would guess they are restrikes or commemorative pieces....Bodes
gap Posted August 17, 2022 Author #3 Posted August 17, 2022 Well, could they not have been re-ribboned at the same time?
suwanneetrader Posted August 17, 2022 #4 Posted August 17, 2022 There are many things I do not know about Medals, but in the 1960s during the First Centennial of the Civil War when I participated in a couple of Battle re-enactments on the Union side we were issued Union Civil War Service Medals with the blue and gray ribbon. I believe the US Civil War Centennial Commission had them struck by the Government and they were like the originals (except not numbered). When stored away mine was on a KY Militia Sgt Band Uniform short jacket with triple row of 1870s KY shaking hands state buttons. For the life of me I can not remember what happened to it, I guess I sold it about 25 years ago when I sold my CW period Generals overcoat. 😪 So what I'm saying is alot were reissued, they are "Real" just not of the period. usmedalman Posted April 27, 2023 #6 Posted April 27, 2023 The Army ribbon was changed to match the Navy ribbon in 1913. The last Army medals with rim numbers were produced in 1928. The Navy went to the full wrap brooch around 1930-33. I don't know when the Navy switched from the curved "For Service" on the reverse to a straight line, but I think it was around 1930 when the US Mint began striking the early campaign medals for the Navy. So taken all together, I believe the medals were struck in the 1930s.
USMCR79 Posted April 27, 2023 #7 Posted April 27, 2023 The planchets appear to be very thick which indicates them to be the 1950's Davidson/Studley restrike (reproduction). They are an OK filler for a collection until a better medal is found - Typically they are a 25/45 dollar medal easy to buy but tough to sell. Bill
