FlyNavy02 Posted August 12, 2022 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2022 This member of Co, F, 2nd Virginia Infantry has embellished his coat collar with a pair of staff pattern Virginia state seal coat buttons. He pinned the letters "VA on the collar points. He has rolled up his shirt collar and affixed his P1896 cap badge. The white spot on his nose is some minor damage to the image. Unidentified but shows what was worn at least to the photographer's studio. Found a mention of his unit: The following narrative was taken from "History of Roanoke County," by George S. Jack and Edward Boyle Jacobs: Military Companies Enlisted During Spanish American War 1898 During the Spanish American War, Roanoke City placed two companies of infantry at the service of the country. Company G of the 2nd Virginia Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, was commanded by Captain Ballard P. Hatcher, with William R. Engleby, First Lieutenant, and John W. Hancock, Second Lieutenant. Company F was mustered into the United States service May 12, 1898, and mustered out of the United States service December 15, 1898, one hundred officers and men. everforward Posted August 28, 2022 Share #4 Posted August 28, 2022 Really neat photo, thanks for posting. The 2nd Va. Infantry would become part of the 116th US Infantry (29th Division) in late 1917 as the Army assigned federal unit numbers to Regiments and Divisions.
