gap Posted August 11, 2022 #1 Posted August 11, 2022 Newly acquired Nicaraguan Campaign Medal. Looks like an early strike to my uninformed eyes, but I don’t see the “double edge” that is readily apparent on other early medals.
gap Posted August 11, 2022 Author #3 Posted August 11, 2022 Typed too fast. Yes, Dominican Campaign medal. Thanks Mods please correct title. I also should mention it’s unnumbered.
bulldog06 Posted August 12, 2022 #4 Posted August 12, 2022 Possibly Joseph Mayer 1924 contract. I can't check mine right now, but the brooch looks like a JM piece. The ribbon is an unsewn replacement. The brooch is upside down. I'm not positive without comparing pieces, but don't think Mayer had the double edge. The unnumbered pieces are a better strike than the rougher numbered ones. Mike
USMCR79 Posted August 12, 2022 #6 Posted August 12, 2022 This is my Mayer made Marine Corps 1916 Dominican that you can compare your medal with
gap Posted August 12, 2022 Author #7 Posted August 12, 2022 The planchette and brooch is much different than mine.

gap Posted January 12, 2024 Author #11 Posted January 12, 2024 Still looking for a verdict on this piece. Don’t want to misrepresent it if I decide to sell.
USMCR79 Posted January 12, 2024 #12 Posted January 12, 2024 My thoughts is that it is a 1950's-60's Medal that was contracted by George Studley for the collector market - It has been poorly reribboned and has an incorrect broach (possibly from a WWI Victory Medal). It would be a decent filler piece for a new collector but from a retail standpoint I would say $35 tops. However I have a tendency to be on the conservative side on my estimates. Bill

Bill I had several of those Studley 1950-60 types on eBay several years ago at $20 each and none of them sold.
KurtA Posted January 14, 2024 #15 Posted January 14, 2024 Studley medals are to medal collecting as Patch King patches are to patch collecting.
usmedalman Posted January 16, 2024 #16 Posted January 16, 2024 I'd like to see the thickness before calling it a Studley. And BTW, Studley contracted with several different manufacturers for his medals. George was the equivalent of a PX for the vets of his day as he did have approval from the War Dept. to sell medals to vets. I believe your medal might be a legit contract pendant that was was loose and put together with a random brooch and new section of ribbon.
USMCR79 Posted January 16, 2024 #17 Posted January 16, 2024 Studley's main contractor was JK Davidson from Philadelphia - However the thickness of the suspension ring is the giveaway as compared to legit US Mint made medals. Bill
