Scarecrow Posted August 11, 2022 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2022 I am mainly a collector of WWII Allied Aviation, however these three items were offered to me this past weekend and were too nice to pass up. I acquired them from an elderly gentleman (himself a WWII USN vet) and long time aviation collector. Due to age he has decided to begin to part with his collection. The first is a WWI Victory medal with "France" clasp and obviously belonged to a pilot, with the mini silver WWI aviator's wing affixed. The second is quite possibly a WWI pilot's Victory medal with a silver Spad aircraft pin attached. The third is a sterling silver Indian Head pin. You can see the silversmith's mark but I'm uncertain if its a British or French mark. I'm told that it is the 2nd type Indian Head insignia for the Lafayette Escardrille squadron. I'm a bit uncertain of that, with my very limited WWI aviation knowledge but figure my more learned Forum colleagues may comment. Thanks for looking. manayunkman Posted August 11, 2022 Share #2 Posted August 11, 2022 Shoot me!! Thats rare stuff, could they all be from the same pilot or do you know for a fact that they aren’t ? Anything on the rims? And congratulations.
Scarecrow Posted August 12, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted August 12, 2022 Manayunkman, Thanks for your kind words. There is nothing on the rims of either medal. My friend that I acquired these from is 94 years old, he has had these many years. He recalled that one of the medals came with the Indian Head insignia but could not recall which one. Neither, unfortunately, is Id'd to a specific pilot. Thanks again. Paul
atb Posted August 12, 2022 Share #4 Posted August 12, 2022 That pin on aircraft is a Nieuport, not a SPAD. A Nieuport 17, I think. The wing struts and tailfin are distinctly different.
