JDK Posted July 14, 2014 #51 Posted July 14, 2014 Very nice! Did it come with the dog tag as well? JD
Patchcollector Posted July 14, 2014 #53 Posted July 14, 2014 Thanks JD and Ed!I'm pretty excited and very happy to add them to my small wing collection.Yes JD,one of Merles' dogtags is included. His career spanned 20 years so this may be post war.I don't know much about dogtags,is this one WW2 era too?
decwriter Posted May 25, 2018 #54 Posted May 25, 2018 Have you guys seen a manufacturer's mark next to the sterling mark like this one? Your thoughts and opinions are welcome. Randy
Costa Posted May 25, 2018 #55 Posted May 25, 2018 yes------------- its a Beverly craft. nothing wrong with it. pure ww2.
5thwingmarty Posted May 25, 2018 #56 Posted May 25, 2018 Their hallmark is a palm tree. The hallmark is a little more obvious on some of their wings, and is sometimes left off their wings. On their small wings they tend to use a palm frond pattern over the entire back of the wings and fully spell out Beverlycraft of Beverly Hills. I would add, Beverlycraft had a wide variety of bombardier wings. I have a similar wing with the bomb and target applied to a base wing, but the bomb on mine is very different. I also have another one which has just the bomb attached to a base observer wing.
pfrost Posted May 25, 2018 Author #57 Posted May 25, 2018 Highlighting what Marty said about Beverly Craft wings.
5thwingmarty Posted May 25, 2018 #58 Posted May 25, 2018 Here is a 3rd variant. These are actually 3-piece wings with the base wing, applied target, and separately applied bomb. The other wing is a typical small Beverlycraft bombardier wing.
5thwingmarty Posted May 25, 2018 #60 Posted May 25, 2018 Here are pics of three Beverlycraft small sized bombardier wings I have. I think they sold many of these as sweetheart pieces with the attached rank insignia as well. The one in the center looks like it was made with the ring at the tip of the bomb to attach an insignia as well.
5thwingmarty Posted May 25, 2018 #61 Posted May 25, 2018 And the backs. The one in the center is the only Beverlycraft piece I have seen with a raised palm tree hallmark and sterling.
Patchcollector Posted May 25, 2018 #62 Posted May 25, 2018 Great reference material. Thanks for posting all these examples Marty and Patrick.
decwriter Posted May 25, 2018 #63 Posted May 25, 2018 I appreciate everybody weighing in on this wing. The data USMF members have on certain subjects is staggering and the pictures for comparison are even better. The wing came with some other items I recently picked up and the seller never mentioned the type of manufacturers mark on it. I think I got lucky!
rathbonemuseum.com Posted May 31, 2018 #64 Posted May 31, 2018 I wrote a brief history of the Beverlycraft company, a short-lived, small manufacturer of costume jewelry, sweetheart jewelry and military insignia during the WWII. You can read it here: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/206883-beverly-craft-history/?hl=beverlycraft&do=findComment&comment=1626392 Cheers, Tod
decwriter Posted May 31, 2018 #65 Posted May 31, 2018 Tod, I checked that out after I originally posted and you did a great job of nailing the history down as it relates to Beverlycraft wings! I appreciate your dedication to getting it right and it paid off for researchers. Regards, Randy
Tesla Posted July 25, 2018 #66 Posted July 25, 2018 Hello All, I was lucky enough to win the bid on this online recently. The wings are two piece and the really interesting thing is that the applied winged bullet has the Beverlycraft palm trees on the back of its wings. I currently have a pilot wing and "E" flight engineer wing from Beverlycraft and these don't have any additional palm trees beside the one stamped with the sterling mark. I know the sweetheart sized wings have the palmtree backs. Does the bombardier wing have the palms on the applied center as well and what are the other styles of wings Beverlycraft made? Thanks for any information!
5thwingmarty Posted July 26, 2018 #67 Posted July 26, 2018 Mine with the attached target does not have palm trees on the back of the bomb. I will have to double check my other one that just has the bomb attached to an observer wing. There are no rules as to how Beverlycraft marked the backs of their wings. I have a pilot wing where the back center section has the palm tree pattern on it.
5thwingmarty Posted July 26, 2018 #68 Posted July 26, 2018 Neither of my Beverlycraft bombardier wings have the palm tree pattern on the back of the bombs. I don't have a Beverlycraft gunner (hopefully someday) but I do have a photo of one I snagged from somewhere. I can see the palm tree pattern clearly on the back of the winged-bullet on that one too, and it is definitely not the same wing as yours as the Beverlycraft hallmark is in a different spot on that wing.
Kropotkin Posted September 10, 2018 #71 Posted September 10, 2018 Hello all. I thought I should add to this thread with a Beverlycraft Observer I’ve just picked up.
Tesla Posted September 13, 2018 #73 Posted September 13, 2018 Here are my most recent aquisitions. The Bombardier is marked Sterling only, no palm tree and is missing the roller catch, but is a nice three piece example. The Navigator wing has a very nice original finish on the armillary sphere and has the palm with the sterling mark. I've seen the instructor wings, aircrew and observer wings in other threads (really awesome!) and I have the pilot, AG, and FE marked "E". Are there any other wings made by Beverlycraft?
5thwingmarty Posted September 14, 2018 #74 Posted September 14, 2018 Glider pilot is the only other one I can think of. I think there is one on ebay.
Kropotkin Posted September 14, 2018 #75 Posted September 14, 2018 Lovey wings. Making me want to add to my solitary example!
