Seek help with US button or badge

Hello folks,

the first one was found in Namibia, when and where I can't say. Namibia was a German protectorate until World War I, and the badge is said to date from that time.

On several trips I myself found 4 US uniform buttons (great seal button, from 1902), someone else also found one, and I also found two US cartridge cases.

Were there members of the US military in German South West Africa at the beginning of the 20th century???

The second, modern button is somewhat similar to the first. Diameter is 38mm. On backside: G / V (the "V" in an circle)us-abzeichen_alt_a.jpg.30b47b860436cb6a78dc4d8d67d40754.jpgus-abzeichen_neu_a.jpg.0de81f972db1915ad196603d33d96feb.jpg

Where/how were these badges used?

Thank you for your help -

Greetings from arche-foto
