Picked up this M1 Navy Helmet With Hawley Liner and wondering what the letters and numbers that are painted on the front mean?  Also was it common to paint the helmet liner also navy blue color?  Many thanks!

Regards,

Drew

I believe it indicates "Mount 43". A capital ship would have numerous AAA mounts. On an Iowa class battleship for example, 20 quad-40mm mounts and 49 20 mm mounts on average. Helmets for the gun crew would be stored at the mount and marked accordingly.

The stencil stands for 40 MM Mount #3

Unless, it came from one of the old Flush Deck, Four Piper Tin Cans, which carried 4 inch guns. Then, it would be 4 inch Mount #3.
