warguy Posted June 30, 2022 #1 Posted June 30, 2022 I started assembling this collection a year ago with the purchase of the Flight Surgeon wing from a Forum member. At the SOS in February, I found the silver Flight Surgeon, (a bit harder to find from my understanding). After that, I decided to try to complete the set with the Flight Nurse wings by Amico. About two weeks later, the silver flight nurse showed up in an online auction that I was fortunate enough to win. I have been searching for the gold Flight Nurse to complete the set since then. I went to the Western Military Show in Pamona two weeks ago and was on the lookout for the gold Amico flight nurse, but no luck. Within an hour of returning home, I was surfing the web and saw one come up with a BIN. Not the deal of the century to be sure, but I think it is a nice example. Thanks for looking. There don't seem to be a lot of these Amico nurse wings posted for viewing (Bob's site doesn't have an example of the AMICO gold flight nurse posted yet).
rustywings Posted June 30, 2022 #4 Posted June 30, 2022 That’s a handsome foursome of Flight Nurse & Flight Surgeon badges! Thanks for posting them!
5thwingmarty Posted June 30, 2022 #5 Posted June 30, 2022 I like how the two FN wings look to have the same enameled N's, but the one on the Silver wing is mounted so high it covers the snakes heads. A very handsome set of AAF medical wings. Now you just need the 2" FS wings to complete the set.
warguy Posted June 30, 2022 Author #6 Posted June 30, 2022 Thanks for th nice comments. Funny you should mention the high N on the silver one Marty, I didnt even notice it until the gold one arrived. After they arrived, I started looking at Flight Nurse wings on the web and you can see a definite “variance” on where these N’s were soldered. Amico seems to be especially “sloppy” with their placement but other makers as well. Here are two quick screen shots I took while perusing that show similarly high mounted N’s on the wing, (at least higher than center). In hand, the two N’s on the gold and silver wings are an exact match and no evidence the one on the silver wings have ever been moved. Must have been a Friday afternoon when those were completed.
5thwingmarty Posted June 30, 2022 #7 Posted June 30, 2022 I wasn't going to say anything else, but I think the N on the silver wing was also mounted upside down. 🤔
warguy Posted June 30, 2022 Author #8 Posted June 30, 2022 Interesting Marty, but not sure I can agree with you on that one. The dimensions look the same right side up or upside down, I just don't know that there is a difference.
B-17Guy Posted July 1, 2022 #9 Posted July 1, 2022 Nice catch on the first pattern flight nurse by Amico. That is a very scarce one! John
warguy Posted July 1, 2022 Author #10 Posted July 1, 2022 Thanks John! Here is an interesting Dondero from Bob sites with the N posted pretty high. I just think these things happened.
5thwingmarty Posted July 1, 2022 #11 Posted July 1, 2022 It has been a long week and I was just being goofy. There may be some applied N's out there that are not the same one way or another, but I can't imagine there would be many.

If only there were someone on the site who could help change that (consider subtle hint dropped). You can get a hold of me from the main page of the site. Great wings. I was lucky enough to have my first set of AAF medical wings to be a matched full size and shirt size gold flight surgeon by Amico. They are definitely quality wings. Now you need to get a Navy flight surgeon in both size and, what I feel is the hardest wing to find, a Navy flight nurse. You are certainly off to a great start.
warguy Posted July 4, 2022 Author #14 Posted July 4, 2022 Thank you Bob, and I will definitely reach out. I want you to know how appreciative I am of the work you have done in constructing your site. The best contemporary reference for wing collectors today. I constantly compare new purchases to your site, and keep it handy on my phone while at shows. Thanks for contributing to my thread. Yes, I will have to start looking into the Navy flight nurse wings, although it sounds like it would be a lucky day when I find one. Bull Moose Posted July 4, 2022 #15 Posted July 4, 2022 I think if you check with Tod Rathbone he might be able to help you locate a Naval Flight Nurse Wing.
bschwartz Posted July 4, 2022 #16 Posted July 4, 2022 Thanks for the kind words on my site. And just a reminder to those who may be newer here, if you have a wing you'd like to share to be added to ww2wings.com just shoot me an email via the site. There was a rumor going around years ago that I only included photos from friends or "big name" collectors which is totally false. The reason the site is as large and diverse as it is is because there all collectors from around the world who have shared unique items to be posted. If you have a wing that you feel needs to be represented either by a unique maker or with a different hallmark than what is currently out there I'd be very happy to share it on the site. As for the Navy flight nurse, I was lucky enough to get one early in my collecting years. The nurse wings mean a lot to me as both my mother and mother-in-law are nurses as our my sister, sister-in-law and my wife's aunt. So I grew up in a household where unless you had internal organs visibly showing or a limb was cut off I got very little sympathy for any injury. Put a band aid on it and get back outside. But the Navy nurse wings are beautiful and there were so few of them that they are a rare treat indeed. I have two pictured on my site.

The rumor I heard was you had to kill a goat with your bare hands and eat its heart before you could even think about getting something posted. Then after the goat heart nibble, you had to join the Free-Wing Masons, learn the secret hand shake, and be able to recite all the lyrics to "Baby Got Back" whilst drinking shots of tequila. But then again, I may have been the one who was promoting that rumor. My dad's best shot at first aid was "rub dirt on it and walk it off". We didn't even GET band aids unless you had already died and the parents wanted to divert the attention of CSI investigators to the neighbors. In all seriousness, Bob has put together the finest wing site collection resource in the world. Thanks for all the work you do! BTW, I have a collection of about 60 non-sterling, clutch back, issue aircrewman wings that I would like you to post. Can I send you those files?
bschwartz Posted July 5, 2022 #18 Posted July 5, 2022 We said we wouldn't talk about the goat and tequila thing. 😁
pfrost Posted July 5, 2022 #19 Posted July 5, 2022 First rule of Bob's Wing site is you don't talk about Bob's wing site.
5thwingmarty Posted July 5, 2022 #20 Posted July 5, 2022 You can talk about Bob's wing site, you just aren't supposed to talk about the initiation ceremony to become a contributor.
warguy Posted July 6, 2022 Author #21 Posted July 6, 2022 Man, I am learning so much here. Who knew? It’s a good thing I am a goat heart connoisseur!
