gap Posted June 25, 2022 #1 Posted June 25, 2022 Any way to find out the recipient of this USN Mexico Service medal? No. 11655.
USMCR79 Posted June 25, 2022 #2 Posted June 25, 2022 Nice strike but the Navy rolls are very "spotty" and this medal is not on them Bill
gap Posted June 25, 2022 Author #3 Posted June 25, 2022 Thanks Bill. Any idea as to the date of manufacture?
USMCR79 Posted June 25, 2022 #4 Posted June 25, 2022 I want to say 1930’s since it has a US mint broach Bill

Planchet is the original Bailey Banks and Biddle strike from 1919 or so. Should have a split wrap brooch with open catch. The later US Mint strike planchet for this medal has the words For Service in a straight format, not curved like this example.
USMCR79 Posted June 26, 2022 #6 Posted June 26, 2022 Thanks Kurt - I don't follow the various contracts that closely since I am not a "type" collector Bill
gap Posted June 26, 2022 Author #7 Posted June 26, 2022 Thanks Kurt. How much does the replacement brooch detract from the value?
bulldog06 Posted June 27, 2022 #8 Posted June 27, 2022 In this case, value is tied to originality. A buyer wanting an "as issued" piece would pass on this one. To me, the value of this medal would be in the parts. The drape appears to be for a US Mint Army Mexican campaign medal. The ribbon for the Army and Navy versions is slightly different in color and width of the blue stripe. The brooch is a 1930's US Mint brooch used on some later Army Mexican campaign medals. While the correct 1919 BB&B Navy brooch is relatively easy to find, the correct Navy ribbon version is very hard to find. Mike
