Found at a Detroit area Flea Market.

Soldiers medal box with just a flat pad to attach the medal and a jewelers name on the inside of the lid.

Is this unusual or perhaps I don’t get around much and this practice is common?

Your soldier's medal case has been repurposed for use by a jewelry store after the war. I will bet that there was a label over the title on the case at one time.

Not that the velvet pad does not have metal piece to hold the medal in place, nor is there a spot for the lapel pin. Often times, you will see two elastic loops added to these pads to hold a necklace etc.
