US Naval Aviation blouse, flat hat and dungarees

Recommended Posts

I have a WWI Naval Aviation blouse, dungarees and flat hat that belonged to my wife’s grandfather. They are named to him, Arthur W Ellis. All are in very nice shape, no moth damage, no missing buttons. I don’t see any maker information. The patch on the arm is in great shape too. Flat hat has E excellence pin on ribbon. Can anyone tell me if this is rare? I’d have to think Aviation was rare in WWI. Please chime in.

Can anyone help me with this uniform? Was Naval Aviation rare in WWI? Any insight to this would be much appreciated.

Thankss,

Hi Perry,

Wells was an Aviation Machinist's Mate second class. The shield-shaped rating badge is typical of the World War era. I think this rating worked on aircraft engines, etc. I can't see a gold chevron on his left cuff which would have indicated 6 months of service overseas.

The Army-Navy E pin is a civilian production award from World War.

I collect WW I Naval Aviation items and can confirm that they are very hard to find. The Navy qualified about 1,600 pilots and the Army qualified about ten times as many.

Nice to have uniform from a family member.
