My Grandfather was Jesse Loveall.  He was an ambulance driver in Italy 1918-1919.  He was with the 527th division.  I have found the passenger list on the Giusseppi Verdi that left Jersey City, NJ on June 13, 1918.  His serial # is about 300,000 higher than everyone else.  I was told that when they asked if anyone had driven a car before, he raised his hand and was added to the 527.

I have attached a lot of images of the memorabilia I have for him.  He was awarded the Italian War Cross.  Certificate # 5246 dated November 24, 1918.

Trench Art from Mt. Grappa.  2 shells with different designs.

Returned on Duca D'Abruzzi from Genoa, Italy to New York, NY on April 23, 1919.

I have added the passenger lists for Section 527 that I could find.

I have not seen any other Italian War Medal certificates like his.  Any info on this would be greatly appriciated.

No, he was a farm hand.  1 of 13 Children and he was 23 when inducted in March 1918.  Was only in Camp for 3 months before leaving for Italy in June.  I have read stories that people were at Camps waiting to go for much longer periods of time.

Thanks, the reason that I asked is most of the SSUs were formed at universities in the same manner as the AFS.  Smucker's history of the USAAS used to be online, but I can't find it.  If you locate it, it will give you a thumbnail history of SSU 527.  Thanks for posting these, by the way, I really like to see USAAS items.
