This is an interesting Japanese Flag brought home as a souvenir by USMC Col Frank Schwable , who commanded the first Marine Night Fighter Squadron during the war, VMF(N)-531.

The red sun has almost completely faded out. What is really nice about this flag is the capture document showing it had been examined by the language section of the 37th infantry division. It was most likely captured and censored in Bougainville in late 1943 or early 1944.

The photo shows Colonel Schwable another members of his Squadron taken during that time. He is the second from the right in the first row.
