Eric Queen Posted May 27, 2022 #1 Posted May 27, 2022 As far as I know, there were only five (5) War Dog related Tech Manuals produced during WW2. The earliest War Dog TM (that I know of) is the Tentative handbook/manual set published in 1943. Interesting that Part I & II are from March yet Part III is from February. I know the Army trained dogs in 1942 but would guess that the training materials were more ad hoc in nature as the K9 Corps program took shape. Assuming that these Tentative manuals were the results of learnings from the early training.
Eric Queen Posted May 27, 2022 Author #2 Posted May 27, 2022 From the Tentative manuals came the formal TM 10-396 in July of 1943. This is (in my opinion) by far the least rare of all the K9 related manuals. This one (below) though is quite special in my opinion. It is the only one I have ever seen stamped to the USMC Dog Training Company at New River and is named to Carl D. Frye.
Eric Queen Posted May 27, 2022 Author #3 Posted May 27, 2022 By far the rarest of the K9 related manuals would be "The Care of Your Dog" manual done by Dr. Stewart/USMC. These were provided only to Marine Dog Handlers and cannot image that many were produced.
Eric Queen Posted May 27, 2022 Author #4 Posted May 27, 2022 I think technically Sled Dogs are a different subject from War Dogs (Scouts, Messengers, Sentries) but wanted to include the Army's Field Manual on Sled Dogs (FM 25-6 Dog Team Transportation from 1941) as FYI If anyone knows of any other K9 related manuals used in WW2 please post them here. Would love to see them and learn. Thank you
1st Sgt CES Posted December 9, 2022 #5 Posted December 9, 2022 I never knew that there were training manuals for dogs--- I learn something here ever day !
