Going through some of the several thousand archival photos at the 1AD and Fort Bliss Museum I came across this water wagon to refill watering troughs for horses and mules while out in the field. You can see that it looks like a large water tank with some hoses on the back for filling the water buckets and troughs and other watering devices. There also appears to be canvas behind the rider/driver and this may be to cover the water tank from the hot desert sun.  The driver is relaxing and even smoking a pipe...

We are not sure what Cavalry unit this is, but this image was with a large grouping of 8th Cavalry images so this may be the 8th Cav at Fort Bliss, Texas.

We have quite a few images that portray the animals and the horse shows and Polo matches that were here at Ft Bliss so when time permits I will upload some of them..

Best regards,

Leigh

Hi Leigh,

you mention horse troughs in the above text, I would be interested to see if you have any period photos featuring water troughs like the one shown from my collection.

thanks lewis.

Great stuff!  Hard to find views of pre-WW1 water transport vehicles.    I did some research into the troop-emphasized water wagon of M1917, which is quite different than the heavy tankers shown here.  Article is posted here:  https://www.militaryhorse.org/drinking-water-cart/

Compare to this.....

Welded not riveted and of course the under carriage.

Hope you dont mind me comparing old to new. Minus horse tanks of course.

Great image,,

I know that water point quite well... Drive by it on Ft Bliss almost every day..

@ LEWIS....

I haven't forgotten about your request regarding the watering troughs.. Still looking for images in my spare time. The museum is currently going through a redesign so time is short for me at the moment...

Best regards
