What are some of the rarer navy rate backgrounds? I’m not talking about what the rate is I’m talking about what the rate is sewn on .

If you are referring to the color of the background material, none on their own are rare. Some specialty marks are more rare than others, and sometimes it is a combination of specialty mark and background color. For example green is the least common of the colors during WWII since they were only worn by Chief Petty Officers in aviation units. Of these Aviation Machinist's Mates are among the most common, while Yeoman is far less common. On the other hand Yeoman on blue, white, and khaki are very common.

Was this your question, or were you looking at more detail like cotton vs. gaberdine vs. wool vs. Palm Beach Cloth?

You have it right. Do you have a answer to the question you asked in the bottom of your post ?

I don’t, as I don’t collect for that level of specificity and what I see as duplication. For example, I don’t care if the gray Chief Gunner’s mate I have is made of cotton, wool, or palm beach cloth. I just want one example.

I don’t know of people who collect that way. If you want every specialty mark, for all rates, for all background colors, that alone is in the hundreds just for WWII era. If you add multiples of each from different materials, you multiply that total, adding hundreds more.
