NEW YORK NATIONAL GUARD VCA MARKSMAN MEDAL W/ STERLING SILVER BAR

i had this for quite awhile a marksman revolver medal it has a 1 year sterling bar that had been attached to it, i would like to know if that is a normal occurrence on bronze medals.

Your medal is from the Veteran Corps of Artillery which is/was a quasi military unit much like the Ancient & Honorable Artillery of Massachusetts - The bar was probably what was  acquired by the unit the year it was awarded.

It looks very similar to the early New York National Guard Marksman medal, so I can see why they might have confused the two.
