blademan Posted May 1, 2022 #1 Posted May 1, 2022 Greetings, I picked up this canteen today at a street fair. Written on the back is a name that is hard to read and "Co. K, 9th" also "17.K". I believe the name may be " I Adrg...." I'm assuming the "17' represents troop number 17 of company K. I'm looking for help finding a roster for Company K of the 9th to see check if there is a trooper with a similar name. There is other writing in the se area but haven't been able toakemit out yet. Thanks for your help in advance.
CAC1901 Posted May 2, 2022 #2 Posted May 2, 2022 That US stencil started use sometime in 1898 by Rock Island Arsenal. The Co for company tips you off this is not a cavalry troop. The 17 K is more indicative of 17th Infantry Co. K. thats how most such canteens haversacks were marked since they were company property, usually just the regiments number and the letter of the company/troop etc. The added Co. K 9th with partial name - shows it wound up at some point in a different regt. Not unusual. If you can get the name down you have a small chance of researching the dude but short of that, its not likely going to be fruitful. These canteens were used for the next 12 years at least so its normal they would have gone thru a number of hands in their service life.

One can see big but looks like it will just be a very canteen. The name looks like it is written in script so hard to make out.
blademan Posted March 15 Author #4 Posted March 15 I was recently playing with Google AI and asked about this canteen for kicks. I got to say, it has been my experience that this AI likes to give me the results it think I would like to hear. Ais argument is this is likely belonged to a member of the 9th cav. It's logic is that the 17 inf co k was wrapping up their tour in the Philippines at same time the 9 cav troop k were starting their tour at the same duty location. It also mentioned that the hand written name and unit were more likely to be done by the 9 th cav instead of the 9th inf stating the 9th inf usually marked their names with proper stencils and although they had just returned from China to the Philippines, they were not stationed in the same part of the country. They also made a case the name was likely of spanish surname and likely a Philippines scout. There was member of this 9th cav with this last name. This said, who knows if 9th cav or inf but fun to ponder.
CAC1901 Posted March 15 #6 Posted March 15 AI gathers up massive amounts of BS from social media like facebook, reddit, gamer sites etc. Probably 80% or more of the postings I've seen are egregiously inaccurate. Then they get cited and reposted because as the saying goes: if it were not true, they wouldn't let it on there.
blademan Posted March 15 Author #7 Posted March 15 I have the same experience with AI. A little entertaining and agree misleading. I almost think it is programmed to tell a reader shat he wants to hear. Even if asked same questions at a different time, it comes up with different answers. Although, I have learned a few things from its rambling. Thanks for the post guys.
