Virginia Manufactory Sword

Recommended Posts

This is a Virginia Manufactory sword. Made between 1806-1808 in Richmond Virginia for the Virginia Militia. Used during the War of 1812 and then placed in storage for decades. Just prior to the beginning of the Civil War these swords were taken out of storage and shortened and new scabbards made. The Ames company in Chicopee Mass. did the modifications. These swords were the first swords issued to the Virginia Cavalry at the onset of the Civil War.

My sword is in relic condition with no scabbard. It was shortened to just under 35 inches. Probably used during the Civil War. Really glad to own this one. I’m an 8th generation Virginian and have wanted one of these swords for a long time.

Very cool.   Looks like decent shape to me. I dont think many survived with the wrap on the handle

Really nice. Do they have any markings on them?

Thank you, this one does not have markings on the blade top like some do. There is a single number (hard to read) on the blade near the grip.

Thank you, it would be nice to have the leather but the leather is long gone. Sure wish it had a scabbard!!
