Confirmation on a possible artillery sold shot?!?!?

Recommended Posts

Here is an item I know nothing about. I hope it is ok to list it in the Civil War forum because I am guessing. I found this one 6 months back in November and would like to ask if someone could tell me if it is an artillery solid shot or just an old track and field shot put? If it is an artillery round, a time period of use would be very interesting to know as well. Sorry, I don’t know the weight. Thank you for your expertise and time:)

A 12# solid shot would be 4.52 " diameter and approx. 12#

A 6# solid shot would be 3.58" diameter and approx. 6 #

Can you see any mold seam ? Could be a steel ore Crusher ball. Most shot puts have a small circle indentation with the weight inside, but not always.

Hi gravecreek, thanks for this info. I don’t see any mold seam. That doesn’t mean there isn’t one under the years of oxidation, though. There isn’t any markings, but could be for the same reason no mold seam is showing. However....and I could be wrong....I really doubt the oxidation is hiding any markings cast into the mold. I’ll take some calipers to it, and try to figure out an appropriate way to weigh it. I’ll even check to see if it is magnetic or not. Then I’ll compare the findings to your numbers. Probably just a Crusher ball.

Cheers....Alex

I think I found what could be the mold seam(see attached photo). Very faint and has to be the correct angle in the lighting. I also got an exact weight of 8 lbs. 3 oz. and anywhere between 3.91” to 3.96” in diameter, with 3.95” the most common measurement. Also, it is composed of a magnetic material. Having done some research online, according to the chart at this link: civilwarartillery.com there was no 8 pdr. in use at the time. Does anyone know if at some point in US military history(or foreign country) if an 8 pdr. was used? I don’t want to leave any stone unturned. Thanks in advance for any information or opinions!

Alex
