jeeplover Posted May 28, 2022 Author Share #154 Posted May 28, 2022 when i go to put a set together i look at the web site https://www.vintage3djoes.com/ he has most of the figures with the cards. on the cards is a check list. i thought i would show what i have been working on. one of my joes i bought had the secret mission to spy island uniform. looking on ebay most of the stuff is obtainable. the issue is the grease gun. i would bet at least 8 out of 10 i see are broken. i was able to get this one. i have fixed it. jeeplover Posted May 28, 2022 Author Share #155 Posted May 28, 2022 ok i had to switch computers. here is the grease gun now. i have included pictures of what i used. i had bought jump rings for it but they were to big . that is the one on the right. the one on the left is a snap ring i think. it is like a small key ring. my wife did this for me my fingers are to fat you use some needle nose pliers to separate it and cut the snap ring. the elastic is 1/4 inch black braid. i looked at the elastic on my other joe stuff and some is 1/4 inch and some is slightly bigger. the burn on the mag did not bother me because the way i have him displayed you do not see. this is my rando sotw figure. He is the one i got the floppy joe kit for. i did not use it and returned it. my issue with it is i want to keep things as original as i can. to use the kit you have to bend the original hooks so they will fit on the bungie i am not willing to do this. i stretched the bungie as thin as i could the oe hooks will not go on with out being bent. so i just used a hair tie until i can find acceptable elastic. the adventure team sticker is not original. aerialbridge Posted May 28, 2022 Share #156 Posted May 28, 2022 Nice job. That's the grease-gun that one of my German SOTW is incorrectly carrying in #138. Might have captured it off a Spy Island commando. So, at least I'm on the way to making that set, I've got the black watch cap and turtleneck with the AT sticker. Yeah, haven't been able to find jump rings small enough for the weapons. You'd think Cotswald or some of the many guys that make replacement parts would sell those. Link to comment
jeeplover Posted May 28, 2022 Author Share #157 Posted May 28, 2022 the sotw german gun is not cheap broken ones are getting 50 dollars crazy. a mint one pulled 224 average is about 70. Link to comment

Ah, my friend, the Germans must have liked those M3s. If you rewind to post #3, you’ll see that my German SOTW is also carrying one. And I agree with @jeeplover, the MP40s are really pricey. The last one I saw was at an antique show, and I think the chap was asking $40. Seeing how, when I built my collection, I was paying ~$15 for a pre-AT (read, painted head) Joe, that was a non-starter for me. Link to comment

Yup, seems to be scarcer than the red version based on prices also. As far as that set, given the prices today, I think I'll try making the sled out of pop-sickle sticks and the dog harnesses out of leather shoe laces. Link to comment

I was buying at about $30-35 per painted head, and that was as recently as 3 years ago on ebay. Curious, when were they $15- in the 80s? If I recall right, in the late 90's they were about $40-45? but I could well be wrong. What were they in 1964, $2 or $1.50? Link to comment

29navy Posted May 31, 2022 Share #165 Posted May 31, 2022 One of my favorite GI Joes. Why? Other than just being a cool piece of equipment, I had the pleasure of setting up and posing for the painting of the box art! I knew the artist that did the box art and I knew Navy and the 40mm so I assisted. He took his reference shots on the battleship North Carolina. We only had 4 people modeling so we moved around while he took photos. I am the shirtless guy on the bottom left of the picture. He took artistic license to make me look buff like that as we were all dressed out (I wished I looked like that). I'm a few other guys, too. I also posed for 2 other GI Joe boxes. Link to comment

And that is a great set (even without your buff picture on it in the starring role.) 😆 The back of the box with about half a dozen sailors and the 40 mm and 5 inch battery is some of the best GI Joe box art, 60s or later, IMO. What other boxes are you on and did you get any pictures of the photo shoot that day? That would be cool to have some of those photos with you in them to go with the set. Link to comment
aerialbridge Posted May 31, 2022 Share #167 Posted May 31, 2022 World War One Doughboy Joe. No face scar, but he could use a shave. Actually, this is not the 1999 Hasbro Doughboy (pictured below with box), but I like this one better. Forgot to fix bayonet on his Springfield '03, but it's in the scabbard hanging on the left side, trench (knuckle) knife on the other side with canteen. IMO, this looks like what Hasbro would have come up with in the 1960s if they'd done a Doughboy G.I. Joe. Link to comment

The artist, Larry Selman, gave me large print of the box art and one of the pictures from the shoot. Nicely framed. I'll take a picture of it when I get home in a couple of days. My daughter is having a baby. I also posed for a Navy SP jeep and a USMC halftrack. I'll take a picture of those too. Link to comment

12thengr Posted June 6, 2022 Share #173 Posted June 6, 2022 Some D-Day Joe's. Two 1st Div Hasbro Joe's from the '90's. A Cotswold Ranger Capt. ( I think related to aeiralbridges WWI doughboy but with a closer shave 😂) An 82nd AB Paratrooper that I think must be a Dragon and an original advertisement for the 1st Div figures. From the May 2000 issue of Military History magazine. Link to comment
29navy Posted June 8, 2022 Share #174 Posted June 8, 2022 As promised, I'm home from my daughter's house. My granddaughter was born on June 1. Her name is Julia Catherine. So I'm posting requested pictures of the other GI Joe boxes I posed for. Here's the photo print of the 40mm painting with a photo of the photo shoot on the battleship North Carolina. Link to comment
29navy Posted June 8, 2022 Share #175 Posted June 8, 2022 Here's the GI Joe Shore Patrol Jeep and the M3 Tank Destroyer half track. I wasn't able to get the halftrack so I'm using some pictures from the internet. I think I have some photos of the halftrack photo shoot, but they are buried somewhere. Since we met Larry Selman through our reenacting group (29th Div), several of us participated in other GI Joe boxes and paintings he was commissioned for. As we had all of the gear, it was easy to pull together something fairly quickly. Link to comment
