Bullseye Canteen owned by Rohrman J Hall

Recommended Posts

I was looking at this canteen which I have owned for about 40 years and noticed for the first time, lettering on the spout. Now before any of you get excited about the white paint, it comes of with a toothbrush . I did it so you could see the lettering . The cover is kind of a brown corduroy  so as I am unfamiliar with the types of canteen covers, I'm not sure if it's Yankee or Confederate. Maybe you can enlighten me.

Hey there. I really like your "bullseye" canteen. These were Federally made but also Confederate used from time to time. The covers varied depending on the maker and what cloth was available. The name on the spout is actually the name of one of the Philadelphia makers. Here are some photos from one of the classic Civil War canteen books put out by Steve Sylvia and Mike O'Donnell. Hope this helps.

So this cover is from a used blanket. Interesting. Thanks.

Very well could be. I’ve seen a variety of wool covers on both bullseye and smooth side Union canteens. Different colors too. I have one now that has a dark blue cover.

Yes similar, but mine is a bullseye. I've owned three or four over the years, but just have one in the collection now. I'll post a picture for you.

Yours is a model 1858 Smooth Sides Canteen

The color is so good, I thought it was a re-pro but the rust inside and outside along with the strap similar to US Capturephotos makes me think it may be real. Do you think it is also ?

It could be a real canteen that was recovered for reenactor use. What does the stitching around the sides look like? Your photos of that are a bit blurry.

That article by Nick Sekela that Frank posted had some great info! I’m still not sure but looking at the photos you posted, I think it may be all original and just in really good condition!

Well I put a black light on the cover and the thread and no change in color. It's a start .
