Of all things, the local pawn shop guy gave me this because he knew I collected this stuff. Wish I knew who he was.

Can you make out the kepi insignia or belt buckle. High collar and a lot of buttons on that jacket. Doesn't look like a Regular.  Maybe a volunteer or militia. Looks Union again. The typical sack coat would be four buttons.

The glass and thin metal frame is just snugly fit into the case.  If you carefully "tap it out" into the palm of your hand you might be surprised by a scrap of paper with name behind the image.  Sometimes they're in there too tight to budge, and most of the time there is nothing behind the image - but I've found a few names hidden behind there in the past.  Don't involve any tools in trying to get it out though, its better as is than with damage from handling. 

 

He's wearing an early war frock coat, definitely a well equipped Federal soldier. Great image!

The person who took the picture, also painted over the buckle and badge with gold paint so no .
