gunbb Posted April 13, 2022 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2022 I bought this from a guy who wanted an AR-15 and needed the money . I was at a gun show in Phoenix and he came by with 2 swords, this and a heavy cavalry sabre . As I looked it over I mentioned it said, Thomas Griswold & Co. ,so I looked it up and it said sword maker from New Orleans . So I said, "Is this Confederate" and he said, "yeah, my dad collected this stuff and I don't want it". I gave him $900 for the pair. When I went to my Time / Life book on Arms of The Confederacy, there it was. The difference between mine and the book one is mine has engraving on the handle. Considering the Yankees captured New Orleans early in 1862, this shouldn't be a very common sword !! Nice stuff, huh !!
iron bender Posted April 13, 2022 Share #2 Posted April 13, 2022 That is incredible. What some dip skit will do to buy a black rifle. Your extremely lucky day!
gunbb Posted April 13, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted April 13, 2022 My thoughts exactly . Out here, you rarely see any of this stuff , especially CSA stuff that's good.

sundance Posted April 13, 2022 Share #5 Posted April 13, 2022 Well that was a stroke of luck. Congrats. I'd love to have any Confederate item but I'm pretty much priced out of that market.

USARV72 Posted April 14, 2022 Share #7 Posted April 14, 2022 Outstanding piece. Ought to consider displaying it at CW show. Know you would have a large crowd at the Richmond,Va. show.
Brian Keith Posted April 14, 2022 Share #8 Posted April 14, 2022 When ever I hear about a Confederate Sword, I immediately think, "House of Swords" from England. Made lots of fakes a number of years ago. I have no real experience with CW swords, but yours looks to be real! Congratulations! BKW
gunbb Posted April 14, 2022 Author Share #9 Posted April 14, 2022 I'd love to display it at Richmond or any other show like that but I live at the other end of the US and don't travel much anymore. Been to the Museum of The Confederacy and thoroughly enjoyed it. Remember these items are out there. You just need to go find them .
warguy Posted April 14, 2022 Share #10 Posted April 14, 2022 I think I was probably at the same gun show if it was the big one in December……who knew a Confederate sword would be walking around. Congrats from a fellow Arizonan (most say we were in the Confederacy by the way), really nice and rare piece.
gunbb Posted April 14, 2022 Author Share #11 Posted April 14, 2022 No ,it was a summer show in the "Ice House" . I used to go to all the shows but as I got older, I don't like to drive so much. I live about 45 miles from the Phoenix area. I always get a table because I can sit down , bring my own food, maybe sell some stuff and hopefully buy some stuff. Lately the shows have devolved into black plastic crap. Too many FFL's selling new guns , along with others who are allowed to bring junk, coins, nuts and chews, jewelry, luggage and on. Good news , there aren't many people like me and when something like this shows up, their ignorance is to my benefit. The guys price was expensive for common swords so the usual sharks must have passed on them, [those who chose to look], whereas I have enough interest and rudimentary knowledge , that I can see value. I'd like to get some cloth as in a jacket, that is truly Confederate. It will show up if I live long enough. Never pass anything by without looking and always bring plenty of money. You never know what might appear.

Joe Walters? I still have a whole stack of his catalogs.
Woodymyster Posted April 16, 2022 Share #13 Posted April 16, 2022 It is interesting that the scabbard goes into the hilt like the type 1 Ames 1840 Artillery sabers. Is the scabbard made from brass or bronze, and what does the seam on the scabbard look like? Also, I didn't know Thomas Griswold & Co. marked their goods in that way. Im just familiar with the arch or with the use of initials.

Just going through the swords from their firm, lots of variations. Next time I'm in NOLA I want to visit their location at Canal and Royal. Wonder if the original building is still there
gunbb Posted April 16, 2022 Author Share #15 Posted April 16, 2022 I'm no metallurgist but I know it's not magnetic anywhere. I would assume brass .
