Help with cracking this name and service number

Ok so this has been getting at me for some years now and it’s time to solve the mystery of who this solider was. 
 

I am willing to donate $200 to anyone that can solve this puzzle, 

 

below is the liner headband with his name and service number - anyone that can help identify him i will donate  $200 to via PayPal. Has to be identifiable 

cover of the Vietnam helmet is 1970 so should help as to when the soldier was WIA as it’s bullet hit.

Best bet is service number and WILLIAM/S

 

Can anyone help looking the service number up please

Looks an awful lot like some letters could be missing, could it be a spelling variation of Eugene?

 

Edit: Looking to try and match some letters to common spellings, I’m not so sure.

I think it says Gene Williams
