The Rooster Posted June 7, 2022 Share #26 Posted June 7, 2022 Ive seen some videos on youtube in forests where they are only covered with 70+ years of fallen leaves etc. Laying where they fell and many still in fighting holes that have filled in with debris over the decades. Un-buried.

LE LOUP DES MERS Posted June 7, 2022 Author Share #28 Posted June 7, 2022 Wow, I never thought my post would get 5.5k views. To give an update, I have been talking to family about this story and it turns out some of the story is not 100% True (which I'm not surprised after reading some of your guys comments). Sometime over the years it was altered by other family members. But, sorry it's taking this long once I get more info I'll post the full true story one here. But yes, my grandfather really did bring home the Thompson it's just the story I was told of how he did ,when I was a kid was fantasy.

Not trying to pile on negative comments at all and I can appreciate him sharing the story. No matter how I slice it, that gun would be toast. The wood would be rotten off completely after 4+ years and the action would not move at all. I’m certain that the ATF wouldn’t even want to look at it, let alone someone with a motorcycle for sale/trade. I found a Walther P99 under a tree a while back. It wasn’t even buried in the dirt and they were still new guns at the time. So if the gun was brand new, right after the release date then thrown there, it could only have been there for 2-3 years max. I’m the slide was completely rusted shut and it seemed like the mag was welded in there. I soaked it in WD40, beat on it with a hammer and nothing broke loose. I can’t imagine a rifle being anything but a rusty wall hanger after that much time outside. Sincere respect to all of the grandpas out there through. We all know that we’d like to hear one more story from them. I heard a story from a guy that would go into the woods with his friends and they found a fully functional MP40 in a WW2 bunker. This was in the 80s. Also there are plenty of videos of diggers finding WW2 weapons in lakes and the wood isn't completely rotted off on some of them even though they've been there 70+ years like in this video

And the grips were still in pretty good shape. The guy in the video claims it was left in a basement for 100 years but the guy he bought it from said he dug it up. Either way I'm impressed it still shoots. https://youtu.be/FhwMkoWH2hU
USMC_COLLECTOR Posted June 8, 2022 Share #31 Posted June 8, 2022 There was a history channel show or an AHC show called Battlefield relics. They dug up KAR98Ks and all sorts of weapons with their stocks till intact. Pretty cool how mud preserves.

You don’t owe anyone here an apology about a story you heard and passed on. Everyone on this forum enjoys hearing a good story and we all want to hear one that proves to be true, your’s included. You should be really proud of your grandfather’s service and his ingenuity to figure out how to bring home a Thompson. If he traded it for an Indian, then it sounds like he made a pretty good trade to me. Thanks for sharing the story with all of us.
LE LOUP DES MERS Posted February 8, 2023 Author Share #34 Posted February 8, 2023 So after talking with family it was clear that the story has been altered over the years but this is what I do know to be true. So my grandpa was assigned to shore duty and he used to carry a Thompson guarding the magazines in Kamakura Japan. He was also assigned a German shepherd and they did shore duty together. It was during the shore duty days when a marine either gave him a Thompson or he traded something to get a Thompson. Which he later brought it home after he got out and traded it for an Indian motorcycle (which he ended up seriously regretting). Then sometime over the years that story of the marine got altered to being dead and my grandfather finding him. But unfortunately that's all I know to be 100% true. The rest of the story my family is unsure of what is true and what isn't.
