Capt.Confederacy Posted March 23, 2022 #1 Posted March 23, 2022 While digging through boxes recently trying to find a particular item in my collection, I found a WW2 piece that I had referenced a few years ago on the boards. Since now I've finally located the item and have a much better camera, I decided to post some pix of it here now. It's a US Army flour sack dated from 1944. I purchased it for a few dollars approximately 25 years ago after I found it in a basket of handkerchiefs at a now-defunct antique mall. It's the first (and only) one I have ever seen. Why someone would have saved it is anyone's guess unless the person was planning on maybe making handkerchiefs out of it or something cloth-related like that. (The Depression mindset of "make do with what you have" could have played a part.) Anyway, here it is.
mikie Posted March 23, 2022 #2 Posted March 23, 2022 That's great! Also great that you saved it. I love the unusual things like this. The war wasn't just about M1 helmets. I hope you didn't have to spend a lot of "bread" for it. Sorry, I tried to resist saying that but just couldn't. Mikie
pvttab Posted March 24, 2022 #3 Posted March 24, 2022 That is a great sack. Love the contract number and date. I'll try to get pictures of the one I have for comparative purposes. I've got Break next week, so I should get time.
everforward Posted March 24, 2022 #4 Posted March 24, 2022 That's really cool....gotta be rare as well.
Capt.Confederacy Posted March 24, 2022 Author #5 Posted March 24, 2022 Thanks that for replies, guys!

Brian Keith Posted March 28, 2022 #7 Posted March 28, 2022 Really unusual artifact! Millions made, few survive. Thanks for posting it! BKW
pvttab Posted April 13, 2022 #8 Posted April 13, 2022 Here is one of the flour sacks I have acquired. I bought it from a vendor in France. Have not searched for any of the related information on it. I do have a few more but will have to track them down.
rtd_sf_eng Posted August 27, 2022 #9 Posted August 27, 2022 At one time, I believe that each post had its own bakery. My dad was stated at Fort Knox, KY from 1955 until 1958 and when my mom and I would go to the commissary she would buy the post-made bakery, which I believe was about 10 or 20 cents a loaf. Larry
